My audio is unstable or has glitches

In:Quality services and hardware require a reliable internet connection. Generally, this means a wired ethernet connection to a fixed internet router. Wifi and mobile broadband tend to give undesirable results.

Speed tests only tell us so much about the suitability of an internet connection. A more useful tool, is the ping feature which is built into your computer...

Running a Ping Test

    On Windows
  • Open a Command Prompt window (search CMD, or Command Prompt).
  • Type ping proxy.sip.audio /n 100 and enter.
  • Once complete, note the Minimum, Maximum and Average values.
    On a Mac
  • Open a Terminal window (look for Terminal in Applications > Utilities)
  • Type ping proxy.sip.audio -c 100 and enter
  • Once complete, note the round trip numerical values.

On a reliable connection, there should be minimal deviation between the fastest and slowest pings.  Any more than a few milliseconds difference can cause problems with real time audio streams.

If you want to run the test for longer (for instance if your issues are intermittent) just change 100 to say 1000 or 5000, and then make some coffee while it does its thing.

Feel free to send your results to us in a support ticket, for analysis.

Other Applications

It has been noted that applications such as Dropbox, can saturate your network connection, during periodic syncing. It is recommended to disable any such automated processes.

Other Factors that affect Audio Stability

Isses with your computer's audio configuration, can also cause audio to sound broken or choppy. For ipDTL & hyrbIP, we advise the following best practice...

Before you log into the web application
  • Disable any power saving settings such as standby, screensaver, and USB power saving.
  • Close any applications that are not required, especiially any that have an audio element.
  • Connect your audio hardware.
  • Set your audio device as Default in your computer's audio settings (input & output).
  • Set the sample rate to 48000Hz for your audio device (input & output).
Other useful advice
  • Reload the web page after your computer has been in standby or screensaver mode.
  • Close any browser tabs that are not required, and avoid switching tabs.
